Top 10 Countries Koreans Marry Internationally

Top 10 Countries Koreans Marry Internationally

International marriage has become a familiar part of modern Korean society. You can now meet Korean and foreign couples not only in Seoul but also in regional cities, university communities, international workplaces, and rural areas across the country.

The latest official 2025 marriage statistics show that about 21,000 marriages in South Korea involved a Korean and a foreign spouse. That was slightly lower than in 2024, but international marriages still represented a meaningful part of Korea’s marriage landscape.

There is one important point before looking at the ranking. The pattern is very different depending on gender. Among Korean men marrying foreign women, Vietnam is number one. Among Korean women marrying foreign men, the United States is number one. So a useful TOP 10 needs to consider both sides rather than treating international marriage as one single pattern.

1. Vietnam

Vietnam is the most important country in Korea’s international marriage landscape. In 2025, Vietnamese women accounted for 30.5 percent of foreign wives married to Korean men, making Vietnam the clear number one country in this category.

The relationship is not entirely one-sided. Vietnam also ranked third among the nationalities of foreign husbands married to Korean women, accounting for 14.8 percent.

Vietnamese communities have grown throughout Korea over many years, and Vietnamese spouses are now a highly visible part of Korea’s multicultural families. Cultural familiarity, geographical proximity, migration networks, employment, study, and established Korean-Vietnamese communities all contribute to these connections.

2. China

China is unusual because it ranks near the top for both Korean men and Korean women. In 2025, Chinese women represented 16.1 percent of foreign wives, while Chinese men represented 16.6 percent of foreign husbands.

Geography is obviously important, but the relationship goes much deeper. Korea and China have extensive business, education, migration, and historical connections, and a large number of Chinese nationals live, study, and work in Korea.

The statistics are also based on nationality, so they can include ethnically Korean Chinese citizens. This is one reason nationality statistics should not automatically be interpreted as cultural background.

3. United States

The United States shows one of the biggest gender differences in Korean international marriage. American men were the largest group of foreign husbands marrying Korean women in 2025, accounting for 28.2 percent.

American women also marry Korean men, although in much smaller numbers than Vietnamese, Chinese, or Thai women. Connections between Korea and the United States have developed through universities, multinational companies, English education, travel, immigration, and decades of close economic and social exchange.

International dating has also become easier as younger Koreans study abroad and foreigners spend longer periods living in Korea.

4. Thailand

Thailand has become another major country for international marriages involving Korean men. Thai women represented 12.5 percent of foreign wives in 2025, placing Thailand third behind Vietnam and China in the foreign-wife statistics.

Korea and Thailand have also become much more connected through tourism, employment, entertainment, and cultural exchange. Younger generations in Thailand have strong exposure to Korean music, dramas, beauty, and food, while Thailand remains one of the most familiar Southeast Asian destinations for Koreans.

The marriage numbers therefore exist inside a much broader relationship between the two societies.

5. Japan

Japan deserves particular attention because international marriage between Koreans and Japanese has a different background from many other combinations. The two countries are geographically close, and travel between Korea and Japan is relatively easy.

Japanese women are an increasingly visible group among foreign wives of Korean men. Official Korean statistics show that marriages between Korean men and Japanese women increased strongly in 2024, and the 2025 data again recorded growth for Japanese spouses.

Young Koreans and Japanese also encounter each other through universities, tourism, language exchange, employment, K-pop, anime, gaming, and social media much more easily than previous generations did.

6. Canada

Canada becomes particularly important when looking at Korean women marrying foreign men. In 2025, 322 Canadian men married Korean women, placing Canada fourth among foreign husbands after the United States, China, and Vietnam.

There are long-established Korean communities in Canadian cities, and Canada has been a popular destination for Korean students, immigrants, and working holiday participants.

These connections create opportunities for relationships to develop naturally through school, work, immigration, and social networks rather than exclusively through traditional international marriage channels.

7. Philippines

The Philippines has a long history of connections with Korea through tourism, English education, employment, religion, and migration. Filipino women continue to appear prominently among foreign women marrying Korean men.

The pattern is different from Vietnam or Thailand because Korean-Filipino relationships have developed through several different routes. Some couples meet in Korea, others through work or study, while others form relationships in the Philippines.

The large number of Koreans who have lived, studied, traveled, or conducted business in the Philippines has also created long-standing personal connections between the two countries.

8. Cambodia

Cambodia has traditionally been associated more strongly with marriages between Korean men and Cambodian women, but the statistics reveal something interesting. Cambodian men also appear among foreign husbands marrying Korean women.

In 2025, 135 Cambodian men married Korean women, putting Cambodia among the ten leading nationalities for foreign husbands.

This is a good example of how Korean international marriage is gradually becoming more diverse. Older stereotypes often describe international marriage only as Korean men marrying Southeast Asian women, but today’s statistics show relationships developing in both directions.

9. Australia

Australia has strong educational and migration connections with South Korea. Many Koreans study, work, travel, or participate in working holiday programs there, creating natural opportunities for international relationships.

In 2025, Australian men were also among the leading groups of foreign husbands married to Korean women, with 165 marriages recorded.

Unlike some international marriages that begin through introductions or organized marriage networks, Korean-Australian couples are often associated with study, employment, travel, and long-term residence abroad.

10. Russia

Russia remains notable in marriages between Korean men and foreign women. The 2025 nationality data show Russian women continuing to form a visible group among foreign wives, alongside other countries from the former Soviet region.

Korea also has established communities from Russia and Central Asia, particularly around industrial regions, universities, and areas with larger foreign populations. Russian-speaking communities in Korea have therefore created more opportunities for relationships to develop locally.

Russia also illustrates why international marriage in Korea should no longer be viewed only through East and Southeast Asia.

Korean Men and Korean Women Show Very Different Patterns

This is probably the most interesting part of the statistics.

For Korean men marrying foreign women in 2025, the three largest nationalities were Vietnam, China, and Thailand. Vietnamese women alone represented 30.5 percent of foreign wives.

For Korean women marrying foreign men, the picture changes dramatically. The United States ranked first at 28.2 percent, followed by China at 16.6 percent and Vietnam at 14.8 percent. Canada, Japan, Australia, Cambodia, Britain, Germany, and France were also among the leading nationalities in the detailed foreign-husband statistics.

This difference tells us much more than a simple overall ranking.

International Marriage in Korea Is Changing

In the past, discussions about international marriage in Korea often focused heavily on Korean men marrying women from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, or other Asian countries. That remains an important part of the statistics, but it is no longer the whole story.

International students, foreign professionals, immigration, working holidays, overseas study, dating apps, social media, and international travel are creating more opportunities for Koreans and foreigners to meet without traditional matchmaking.

The latest numbers reflect that diversity. In 2025, Korea recorded about 15,600 marriages between Korean men and foreign women and about 5,100 between Korean women and foreign men.

What the Numbers Do Not Tell Us

Marriage statistics tell us nationality, but they cannot tell us why two people fell in love. Two Korean-Vietnamese couples may have completely different stories. One may have met through university, another at work, another through friends, and another through an introduction.

The same applies to Korean-American, Korean-Chinese, Korean-Japanese, and every other international couple. It is therefore better to use these rankings to understand broad demographic patterns rather than create stereotypes about people from particular countries.

What the statistics clearly show is that international marriage has become a lasting part of Korean society, and the countries connected to Korean families are becoming increasingly diverse.
